Boundary
December 14 - January 25, 2025

Downtown Los Angeles’ Corey Helford Gallery (CHG) is proud to announce its next major solo show. Boundary, featuring new works from Miho Hirano, is set to premiere December 14th in Gallery 3.

One of the most captivating Japanese artists in the contemporary art world, Miho Hirano explores themes of sensuality,  femininity, and the unknown by portraying beautiful women whose physical features blend with the nature surrounding them. Flowers, birds, fish, and water become exquisite organic accessories, adorning her protagonists like precious jewels. The fleeting glances of Hirano’s subjects symbolize transcendence and an escape from reality. These concepts are expressed using oil on canvas to fuse elements, such as blooming flowers and immersive waters, that remind us of our sacred relationship with the natural world and the mysteries beyond.

Regarding her new works, the artist shares, “Throughout my life, I have come into contact with the deaths of many people close to me, and whether I like it or not, I often think about death. And while thinking about the deceased, I have come to realize that this is not something that happens to other people. Death is always close by. Expressions such as ‘back to back with death’ or ‘side by side with death’ remind us of the relationship between life and death. By depicting the ‘border’ between life and death in my work, I am able to express the precariousness, and also the ‘point of contact’ where the living and the dead come into contact and have a dialogue with their souls.”

Open to the public and free of charge, Boundary is set to debut on Saturday, December 14th from 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm in Gallery 3, alongside a solo show by world-renown British graffiti/street art collective The London Police, titled Escape to L.A., in the Main Gallery and a solo show by Dutch artist Handiedan, titled Geef Me Nog Een Kus, also in the Main Gallery. The shows will be on view at CHG through January 25th with the exception of December 24th-31st, when the gallery will be closed for the holidays.

About Miho Hirano:

Based in Chiba, Japan, Japanese artist Miho Hirano first studied at the Musashino Art University and began painting professionally soon after graduating in 2008. Her dreamy oil paintings are inhabited by ephemeral spirits at one with their natural environment, whose hair flows into flowering tree branches or flowing strands of seaweed. She adorns their hair with accessories made of flora and fauna like swarming bees, hummingbirds, and goldfish, each carrying their own weight as elements of beauty and symbols of Hirano’s identity. In essence, each of her paintings represents a world where humans, nature, and the unknown can coexist.

The artist’s work has been exhibited worldwide, including at exhibitions in London, Tokyo, Melbourne, and Los Angeles. In 2016, Hirano exhibited for the first time in the U.S. as part of a two-woman exhibition at Los Angeles’ Corey Helford Gallery, followed by three solo shows at the gallery (including 2017’s The Beauties of Nature, 2019’s Recollection, and 2022’s Harmony With Material and Spirit).
