Junna Maruyama (b. 1999, Saitama, Japan) is a Saitama-based contemporary artist rapidly gaining international attention for her Pop-surrealist portraits of dreamy, melancholic girls. A graduate of Joshibi University of Art and Design Junior College, Maruyama combines kaleidoscopic color, magical symbology, and gendered materials such as glitter, buttons, and stickers to create work that is both playful and unsettling. Her doll-like characters explore adolescent emotion, social pressure, and fantasy through a distinctly feminine visual language.
Since 2019, Maruyama has exhibited internationally and received multiple awards (including a solo presentation at Shanghai’s Powerlong Museumin 2021). In 2022, she won the Newcomer Prize at the 89th Dokuritsu Exhibition (Independent Exhibition), followed by the SOMPO Museum Prize at the 90th Commemorative Dokuritsu Exhibition in 2023, and the Association Prize at the 91st Dokuritsu Exhibition in 2024. Her work continues to draw collectors and curators seeking a fresh voice in contemporary Asian art.
